Apprentice - Adult Care Workers - temporary for one year Salary: £15,014 p.a. (weekly wage £287.96p)

The Service

Portsmouth Day Service provides support for adults with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) and complex needs.

Through the implementation of person centred approaches, sensory engagement to enable maximum opportunities and the vision and expectations of "Valuing People Now", we aim to enable service users to make informed choices through communication techniques, maintain and develop skills and enjoy a good quality of life.

Portsmouth Day Service is currently open Monday to Friday.

What is the role?

Role context and Purpose

You will work as part of Portsmouth Day Services team to ensure that Service Users receive a day care package that reflects their personal abilities and skills and promotes further engagement, independence, well-being and growth.

Using therapeutic methods to achieve positive outcomes for individuals is central to the service we deliver and you will have the opportunity to understand what this means for individuals through training and shadowing.

You will have training to be able to deliver meaningful sessions and activities to service users who have complex needs alongside the staff team. Support, guidance, training and mentoring opportunities will be available to enable you to be involved in producing and monitoring individual service user care plans, alongside staff who will be reviewing and evaluating outcomes for individuals.

You will be assisting and learning from other members of staff how to follow session plans and to evidence outcomes for service users in line with their care plans.

The key worker duties will be explained to you and you will be able to co-key work alongside a mentor. Keyworking responsibilities include understanding the needs of a specific service user, understanding their preferences, advocating these needs and wishes to others. You will be supporting the keyworker in the maintaining of accurate records, keeping information up to date.

You will learn about all aspects of personal care (including toileting) taking into account service users personal preferences, guidelines and risk assessments.

You will have training on how to assist service users with eating and drinking, on the safe administering of medication, mobility

Who is the person?

You need to:

1. Have a willingness to learn how to provide personal care in a way that is comfortable and safe for the individual, using equipment provided (training will be provided). 2. Be available for mandatory and other relevant training. 3. Have good literacy skills that will enable you to contribute towards support plans, care plans risk assessments both in writing and on the computer. (I T training will be provided). 4. Have good physical health to enable you to undertake the physical and mental demands of the role (you will be required to support and assist in the moving and handling of people although you will have equipment to assist you with this and training will be provided). 5. Have a willingness to support service users while on transport when working within the community alongside others. 6. Have the ability to learn how to undertake and follow risk assessments which minimise risk, whilst supporting service users to live quality lives. 7. Have a commitment to equal opportunities. 8. The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post. 9. Be able to work as part of a team.
